TV channels France
French television combines one of Europe's strongest public groups, private majors with decades of history, a news hub broadcasting to the world in four languages, and a local mesh running from Brittany to the Alps and out to the overseas territories.
The Public Core
The France Télévisions family carries the public service: France 2 as the flagship general channel, France 3 with its regional editions, France 4 for youth and families, and France 5 for documentaries and knowledge. Beside them stands ARTE, the Franco-German cultural network for documentary, cinema and the arts. The public presence extends to France Bleu, Radio France's regional network, and France Inter TV, the visual arm of the public radio station.
The Private Majors
M6 - Métropole Télévision of the RTL Group - leads the private field. C8 is the Canal+ group's entertainment channel, launched as Direct 8 in 2005. The TF1 group fields TMC and TFX, its channel for younger adults, while children and families are served by Gulli TV, created by Lagardère Active and France Télévisions and part of Groupe M6 since 2019.
A News Capital
France 24, the state-owned international news network, appears in French, English, Arabic and Spanish editions. Domestic rolling news comes from C News, the Canal+ group's all-news channel, and France Info, the public news service backed by France Télévisions, Radio France and France Médias Monde. Business belongs to BFM Business. The francophone news field is rounded out by Euronews France, Africanews en français, Africa 24, Israel's i24News, Germany's DW (Français) and China's CGTN Français.
Parliament and Sport
France's two chambers have their own screens: LCP covers the National Assembly and Public Sénat the Senate, together forming La Chaîne parlementaire since the law of 30 December 1999. In sport, L'Équipe chaine carries the name of the famous sports daily onto television, while Sport en France focuses on national competition.
The Local Mesh and Overseas
Local broadcasting is remarkably dense: TV7 Bordeaux in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Tébéo TV and TébéSud in Brittany, Canal 32 in Troyes, TéléGrenoble and 8 Mont-Blanc in the Alps, Lyon Capitale TV in Lyon, Weo TV and Grand Lille TV in the north, ViàOccitanie and TV Sud in the south, TV Tours-Val de Loire in the Loire Valley, 7ALimoges in the Limousin, BFM Normandie in Normandy, and the Paris-area stations IDF1, TVM Est Parisien and TV78. Beyond the mainland, TNTV broadcasts from Papeete in French Polynesia, Antenne Réunion serves the Indian Ocean island, and Monaco Info covers the Principality of Monaco.
Faith, Learning and Lifestyle
Christian broadcasting includes the Catholic KTO TV, TV Lourdes linked to the Sanctuary of Lourdes, the evangelical EMCI TV and Al Malakoot Sat, the French-language service of the Kingdom Sat network. Education and science appear through SQOOL TV for schools and families, the student channel MCE TV and the European Space Agency's ESA Web TV. Lifestyle and niche interests are covered by the Paris-based Fashion TV, the travel channel D5TV, Men's up TV and Monde Du Loisir - MDL.
