TV channels China
Chinese television speaks with two voices: the domestic channels of China Central Television for viewers at home, and the outward-looking services built for the world. Both are represented here, and all belong to the country's state media family.
The Domestic Flagship
CCTV-1 is the primary channel of China Central Television and the national flagship terrestrial network of the People's Republic of China. Broadcasting from the CCTV Headquarters on East 3rd Ring Road in Beijing, it carries the network's core mix of news, general entertainment and major national broadcasts, and its terrestrial signal is free-to-air across the country.
A Mandarin Service for the World
CCTV-4, the Chinese International Channel, was launched on 1 October 1992 to serve Chinese communities across the globe. One of the CCTV channels broadcasting beyond the mainland, it carries documentaries, music, news, drama series and children's programmes for the Greater China region and the worldwide diaspora, with the stated mission of carrying Chinese civilization to overseas viewers.
Sports and Global News
CCTV-5 Sport is the main sports broadcaster of the People's Republic of China, on air since 1 January 1995. Its grid is the country's sport: live coverage of major leagues and events, Chinese football and basketball, table tennis and badminton - the sports China dominates - plus Olympic coverage and sports news. CGTN America is the American service of China Global Television Network, the international division of the state-owned China Media Group; headquartered in Washington, D.C., it began broadcasting in the United States on 31 December 2016, replacing the former CCTV-NEWS in the region, and covers North and South America with news and current affairs.
