TV channels Chile
Chilean television grew in layers: university experiments of the late 1950s, the state channel, the private networks of the 1990s, and on top of them a dense mesh of regional stations, faith broadcasters and music screens.
From University Labs to National Networks
The oldest roots belong to the universities. UCV TV, the television service of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, goes back to experimental broadcasts in 1957, and Canal 13 - known in Chile simply as El 13 - was launched on 21 August 1959 by engineers of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Chilevisión followed on 4 November 1960, founded by the University of Chile. The state entered in 1969: TVN - Televisión Nacional de Chile - launched nationwide on 18 September 1969 by order of President Eduardo Frei Montalva and remains the country's public service broadcaster. Private television arrived with Mega HD - Red Televisiva Megavisión of the Bethia holding - on 23 October 1990, and La Red televisión followed on 12 May 1991 as the country's second private station.
The News Habit
CNN Chile, launched on 4 December 2008 as a joint venture between cable operator VTR and the Turner group, was the country's first 24-hour news channel. 24 Horas is TVN's news service, a brand since 1 October 1990 that became a channel of its own in 2009, while Meganoticias carries Mega's newsroom. The pan-Latin American network teleSUR appears in the lineup as well, and parliamentary coverage comes from TV Senado, the channel of the Chilean Senate in Valparaíso.
Television Along the Length of the Country
Regional broadcasting runs from the far north to Patagonia: Arica TV 12 in Arica, Iquique Televisión and Antofagasta TV on the northern coast, Canal 9 Bío-Bío Televisión and Canal TVU - the station of the Universidad de Concepción - in the Bío-Bío region, Canal 33 Temuco and Temuco Televisión in La Araucanía, Canal 5 Puerto Montt in Los Lagos and ITV Patagonia at the southern tip. Around Valparaíso, community screens include Canal 74 in Placilla, Canal 2 TV San Antonio and Voz de Poder Television from Talcahuano.
Faith on the Screen
Chile's evangelical and Christian television is broad: TNE TV - Televisión Nacional Evangélica - Nuevo Tiempo Chile, the Chilean outlet of the Adventist Nuevo Tiempo network, plus Bendicion Tv Chile, Gracia Tv, Vida Tv, CCINT and Nuevos Comienzos TV.
Music and Youth
Mundo de La Musica Tv rotates video clips around the clock, Zapping Music comes from the Zapping platform, and Retro Plus TV and Rewind Tv lean on retro series and music. ETC, the cable channel launched in 1996, grew from a children's service into a benchmark for anime and youth series in the country.
