CNN, the Cable News Network, is an American multinational news media company and the flagship property of CNN Worldwide. It was founded on 1 June 1980 by the media proprietor Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld as a twenty-four-hour cable news channel, and it was the first television channel to provide continuous news coverage and the first all-news channel in the United States.

Reach

As of December 2023 CNN counted 68,974,000 subscribing television households in the United States, according to Nielsen, down from eighty million in March 2021. In June 2021 it ranked third among cable news networks with an average of 580,000 viewers through the day, and its position among all basic cable channels has moved between seventh and twenty-first over the past decade as audiences shifted.

Globally the network reaches far beyond the United States through CNN International, which operates separate feeds for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and through CNN en Español for Latin America.

Output

The schedule is built on rolling news: continuous coverage of breaking events, anchored from Atlanta and from bureaux around the world, with correspondents reporting live from the scene. Politics, the courts, business, weather emergencies and international conflicts dominate the day, and special coverage replaces regular programming when a major story develops.

Interview and analysis programmes, documentaries and the network's own digital output fill the remaining hours, and CNN publishes continuously on its website and applications.

Access

CNN is carried by cable, satellite and streaming providers, and its live feed is delivered over the internet in high definition, with the channel available on phones and connected televisions.
