Izvestia, Izvestiya in transliteration, is one of Russia's oldest media titles. The newspaper was founded in February 1917 and during the Soviet period served as the official organ of the governing bodies of the state, including the Supreme Soviet. Since August 1991 it has operated as an independent publication, and from 1996 its owners have been large Russian business structures.

Today the brand extends beyond print: a television channel of the same name broadcasts alongside the daily paper, and the newsroom publishes at iz.ru.

The Newspaper

Its subjects are events in Russia and abroad, analysis and comment, business and the economy, and coverage of cultural and sporting life. From 1960 to 2000 the paper issued a Sunday weekly supplement, Nedelya, which was revived in January 2006.

The title has passed through several editorial changes. From 2016 the editor-in-chief was Arseny Oganesyan, a former deputy governor of Kaluga region, as shareholders sought to turn the paper into a respectable analytical publication. That summer the editorial office moved to 3rd Pavlovsky Lane, where the offices of the REN TV channel are located.

Television

The Izvestia channel carries the newsroom's agenda to screen: bulletins through the day, live coverage of major events, interviews and studio discussion of politics, the economy and international affairs. Its live stream sits on the iz.ru site, where the broadcast runs alongside the written reporting.

In 2022 the outlet was banned from broadcasting in the European Union, which cited manipulation of information and gross distortion of facts.
