Armenian Public TV - officially the Public Television Company of Armenia (Հայաստանի Հանրային Հեռուստաընկերություն), known as 1TV, AMPTV or ARMTV - is Armenia's public television broadcaster. It traces its origins to 29 November 1956, when the first Armenian television programme was transmitted, with regular broadcasting inaugurated on 9 February 1957.

From Soviet Armenia's First Screens

The station grew from the USSR Council of Ministers' decision of 5 September 1955 to build television centres across the Union republics. In its first weeks it aired mostly films, adding a New Year's special at the end of 1956 and the first children's programme on 2 January 1957. Broadcasting four days a week, it transmitted its first news programme, the News of the Week, on 6 August 1957, and by February 1958 the news had become periodical, creating the station's news editorial office. The early 1970s brought work on a second channel, enabled by the Yerevan-Kapan microwave link.

The Public Broadcaster Today

Today 1TV anchors its day with the Lurer news bulletins, the cooking and lifestyle show Patrastenk miastin, the talk formats and the Armenian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, alongside cultural strands such as Nota-nota, classical concerts, the Zinuzh armed-forces magazine, parliamentary debates and feature films from the Armenian cinema heritage - including special coverage of national events such as the COP17 biodiversity summit hosted in Yerevan.
