M2 is a Hungarian public-service television channel and the only free-to-air Hungarian-language children's channel in Hungary. It belongs to the public media family that also includes Duna, Duna World, M1, M3, M4 Sport and M5, and shares its broadcast day with the evening programme block M2 Petőfi.

From MTV2 to a Children's Channel

Test broadcasts began on 18 August 1971, and regular programming started on 7 November 1973 as MTV2, the second programme of Magyar Televízió. Until 1989 the channel was on air only in the afternoon and evening and stayed off the air on Mondays; between 1989 and 1994 it was renamed TV2. In October 1997 it became the first Magyar Televízió channel to broadcast by satellite, on Hot Bird 3, while its terrestrial frequencies were handed over to the newly launched RTL Klub and TV2. Through the 2000s the schedule leaned on educational, cultural and documentary programmes, and HD broadcasting began on 1 August 2008, when the Beijing Olympics became the first event shown in high definition.

On 22 December 2012 the channel relaunched as a full-time children's service - the first Hungarian-language children's channel to subtitle its programmes. In November 2013 it was named the best children's channel in Europe, and on 1 October 2020 it introduced a new visual identity and programme structure.

Programming for Young Viewers

M2 targets children aged 0-12 and is on air daily from 5:00 to 20:00. Its own productions include the children's news Hetedhét Gyerekhíradó, the craft magazine Hetedhét barkács, the cooking show Hetedhét kukta, the explainer Hogyan működik, the book programme Könyvkalauz and the knowledge bites of Tudáscseppek. Story and series formats include Apacuka, Bab, Berci kalandjai (2023), Puskás Öcsi és barátai (2023), Rozmaring kunyhó (2021-2022), Lengemesék - Nyár a nádtengeren (2015) and Egy komisz kölyök naplója (2013), while school-age viewers get quiz and family formats such as A legokosabb osztály, Nagyszünet, the zoo visit Séta az állatkertben and the bedtime co-production Csillagok esti mesefényben.

M2 Petőfi in the Evening

Since 15 March 2015 the channel's evening hours, from 20:00 until 5:00, have belonged to M2 Petőfi, the companion block for older youth and family audiences that makes M2 a shared day-and-night service rather than a children-only frequency.

Availability and Audience

M2 is carried nationwide on the free MinDig TV terrestrial platform on channel position 2, with coverage measured at 100 percent of the country in 2018, and is also distributed by Hungarian cable and satellite operators. Although it is the only free-to-air Hungarian-language children's channel, commercial pay-TV competitors draw larger audiences: in 2024 M2 was the fourth most-watched children's channel in Hungary, behind Nick Jr., Cartoon Network and JimJam.
