Televisiete - Canal 7 - is one of Guatemala's oldest television channels: founded on 15 December 1964 as Televisora Independiente, it broadcasts under the slogan "Solo por Canal 7".

The Channel That Stayed on Air

In the 1970s the station relaunched as Televisiete and became the first Guatemalan channel to carry telenovelas from Mexico's Televisa - a programming staple that held top ratings for more than 50 years. When the devastating earthquake struck Guatemala City on 4 February 1976, Canal 7 was the only television station to stay on air for several hours, broadcasting the official messages of President Kjell Eugenio Laugerud's government.

Satellite and Sport Firsts

In the early 1980s the channel reached national coverage and its greatest audience success after installing the country's first satellite unit, pioneering music videoclips - the first by the Dominican July Mateo - and becoming the first Guatemalan channel to transmit sports programming.

Part of Albavisión

Acquired in 1980 by the Mexican-Guatemalan businessman Remigio Ángel González together with Canal 3, the station today forms part of Grupo Chapín TV within the Albavisión consortium, alongside sister channels Canal 11, Canal 13 and TN23.
