In 2016, a comedian on a small German channel sang a satirical poem about the Turkish president, and the affair briefly became a diplomatic incident. That channel was ZDFneo - ZDF's screen for the young and the irreverent, and the home of Jan Böhmermann's Neo Magazin Royale.

ZDFneo launched on 1 November 2009, replacing the documentary channel ZDFdokukanal. Its job is to be what the flagship ZDF is not: the public broadcaster's younger, sharper face, programmed for viewers aged 25 to 49 who find the main channel's evening grid a little too settled.

Comedy With Teeth

The channel made its name on comedy and satire - the Neo Magazin Royale above all - alongside talk and magazine formats, international series and documentaries chosen for a younger audience. The style is deliberately looser than the parent network, and deliberately funnier.

Run from Mainz and led by Simone Emmelius since 2012, ZDFneo switched to high definition in 2012 and took its current look in 2017. It is the part of German public television that still takes risks.
