TV channels Nigeria
Nigerian television is the biggest in Africa and one of the most distinctive: a mature news sector, a powerful entertainment industry, state broadcasters that have run since the early eighties, and a block of church channels reflecting the country's Pentecostal media culture.
The News Screens
Channels Television is the 24-hour news channel broadcasting live from Lagos, long established as one of Nigeria and West Africa's leading sources of information. NTA Network News belongs to the Nigerian Television Authority - the NTA, established in 1977, which began with a monopoly on television broadcasting and grew into the country's largest television network. TVC News adds the news channel of TVC, with breaking coverage and current-affairs analysis from Lagos.
State Television
Nigeria's states keep their own screens. Lagos TV - Lagos State Television - has been on air since October 1980 and was the first Nigerian station to operate on both VHF and UHF bands. Galaxy TV Lagos holds the title of the first private television station registered and broadcast in Nigeria, with more than two decades of history. Ogun State TV (OGTV) in Abeokuta, established on 25 December 1981, serves its state free-to-air with drama, news, sports and movies.
Entertainment, Music and Family
TVC Entertainment is TVC's urban, Afro-centric entertainment channel based in Lagos State. Wap TV made its debut on 1 October 2012 as Nigeria's first 24-hour family entertainment channel. Hip TV, under Ayo Animashaun, is the basic-cable home of Nigerian music, entertainment and fashion. ABN, the African Broadcasting Network, completes the entertainment block with its compact, creative approach to programming.
The Church Broadcasters
The largest block belongs to the churches. Emmanuel TV is the television ministry of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos, founded by Prophet T.B. Joshua and on air since 8 March 2006 under the motto "Changing Lives, Changing Nations, Changing the World". MFM carries the services of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, founded in 1989 by Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, from its Prayer City headquarters on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. ACNN TV - Advent Cable Network Nigeria - is the televangelism arm of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). Chosen TV is a 24-hour revival message channel broadcasting from Lagos, and Dunamis TV brings the preaching and worship of the Dunamis International Gospel Centre from its Abuja headquarters.
