Channels Television is a Nigerian independent 24-hour news and media television channel based in Lagos. Its parent company, Channels Incorporated, was founded in 1992 by the broadcaster John Momoh and Sola Momoh - a year before Nigeria deregulated broadcast media - and the channel began broadcasting in 1995, with its first terrestrial transmission on 1 July 1995 read by John Momoh himself.
Nigeria's News Watchdog
Licensed in June 1993 on UHF channel 39, the channel built its mission on acting as a watchdog over governmental policies, producing news and current-affairs programmes on Nigerian domestic issues. It has grown from a 15-employee Lagos station to stations in Abuja, Edo and Kano, with bureaus in almost every Nigerian state and international media relationships. In September 2008 the channel was briefly shut down by President Yar'Adua's government before resuming its place as one of the country's most-watched news sources, reaching over 20 million viewers.
The Flagship Hours
The channel's day is anchored by its flagship programmes: the morning talk show Sunrise Daily, the evening political discussion Politics Today with Seun Okinbaloye, and the flagship news bulletin News at Ten - the hours around which Nigeria's viewers have organised their news day for decades.
