Fox 4 Kansas City Live Stream
Fox 4 Kansas City - WDAF - is the Fox affiliate of the Kansas City market: the city's oldest television station, on the air since 16 October 1949 and owned today by Nexstar Media Group. Broadcasting from Summit Street in the Signal Hill section of Kansas City, Missouri, it pairs Fox's national programming with one of the market's largest local news operations - about ten hours of local news every weekday - and its newscasts also stream live online.
Channel 4 was, for its first three and a half years, the only television station in Kansas City, and that head start still shows: the newsroom built by the Kansas City Star newspaper remains a market leader in mornings and a fixture on both sides of the state line.
Ten Hours of News a Day
Fox 4 News starts before dawn - the morning block begins before 5 a.m. - and runs through a 4 p.m. hour added in 2022, an early-evening block, a 9 p.m. newscast dating to the station's switch to Fox, and a late edition at 10. The weather team works one of America's most demanding severe-weather markets: Kansas City sits at the western edge of tornado alley, where spring supercells and winter ice storms both demand round-the-clock coverage. Sports runs as a year-round beat rather than a broadcast franchise, with Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals coverage anchoring the news blocks; the station carried Royals baseball for thirteen seasons from 1980 to 1992 and Chiefs preseason football in the late 1990s.
Kansas City's First Station
WDAF-TV signed on 16 October 1949 as an NBC affiliate built by The Kansas City Star and its WDAF radio station, and its early years produced some of the market's defining broadcast moments - nationwide coverage of the Great Flood of 1951 among them. After the newspaper's divestiture, the station passed through Taft Broadcasting and Great American before New World Communications switched it to Fox on 12 September 1994 - the only NBC affiliate to join that year's mass realignment, ending a 45-year relationship with NBC. The "Fox 4" brand arrived in January 1997, and after the Local TV and Tribune years, Nexstar took over in 2019.
The Signal Hill Studio
The station's studios and transmitter sit together on Summit Street, the same Signal Hill site the Kansas City Star chose in 1948, with the signal multiplexed into Fox on 4.1 and the Antenna TV, Rewind TV and Roar diginets on 4.2 through 4.4. Anchors with decades-long runs have defined the station's identity - Phil Witt held the anchor desk for 34 years - and the alumni list runs from Gayle King to Harris Faulkner, the morning anchor who left Kansas City for Fox News in 2000.
