KSHB 41 Kansas City Live Stream
KSHB 41 is Kansas City's NBC affiliate: a station born in 1970 as an independent named for an insurance company, renamed for its broadcast owner, launched with the Fox network and landed on NBC in the great 1994 affiliation switch. Owned by the E. W. Scripps Company and broadcasting from studios on Oak Street in southern Kansas City, it pairs the network's programming with a newsroom covering both sides of the state line, and its newscasts also stream live online.
No station in the market has an identity arc quite like it: Business Men's Assurance to Scripps Howard Broadcasting, independent to Fox to NBC - four names and three networks in three decades.
Metro Coverage from Oak Street
KSHB 41 covers the Kansas City metropolitan area - the Missouri side, the Kansas suburbs, and the state-line communities in between - with newscasts from morning to late night and a weather desk working the same severe-weather corridor as every Kansas City station: tornado alley, where spring supercells track from Kansas toward the metro and winter storms arrive from the plains. Sports runs through the newsroom's year - Chiefs coverage as a civic beat in a football-mad market, with the team's Sunday-night appearances on NBC's Sunday Night Football putting the network's games on channel 41 - and independent sister station KMCI shares the Scripps operation in the same building.
From Business Men's Assurance to NBC
Channel 41 signed on 28 September 1970 as KBMA-TV - named for the Business Men's Assurance Company, the station's owner - as the second independent in Kansas City within a year. It outlasted its competitor and spent the 1970s and 1980s as the market's primary independent, airing syndicated reruns, movies and local sports. Scripps took majority control in 1977 and renamed the station KSHB-TV in 1981 - the initials standing for Scripps Howard Broadcasting - upon its move to the present studios. Channel 41 joined the Fox network at its 1986 launch and produced its first full-length newscast in 1993, only to switch to NBC a year later in the affiliation realignment that sent WDAF-TV to Fox. The change quadrupled the news staff and rebuilt the news format; traction in the ratings took longer, but the station has been the market's NBC outlet ever since.
The Blue River Transmitter
KSHB's transmitter stands along the Blue River Greenway in the city's Hillcrest neighborhood, with the Oak Street studios anchoring the Scripps cluster in southern Kansas City. For a station that took four and a half years of permit shuffles and construction delays just to reach the air - the founding saga included a proposed move to Fairway, Kansas, and a construction strike - the modern operation runs smoothly: NBC's national schedule, a full local newsroom, a live stream that carries both to any screen, and a place in the market's competitive three-station news race, thirty years into the NBC era.
