Al Mayadeen is a pan-Arab satellite news channel headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon. Launched on 11 June 2012, it was founded by Ghassan Ben Jeddou, the Tunisian journalist who had previously served as Al Jazeera's Beirut bureau chief, and much of its original senior staff were drawn from Al Jazeera's correspondents and editors.

A distinct voice in Arab news

From its launch, Al Mayadeen positioned itself as an alternative to the Gulf-owned news giants: where Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya and Sky News Arabia reflect their owners' outlooks, Al Mayadeen is known for promoting left-wing points of view and religious plurality, and for giving airtime to political forces across the Arab world's diverse spectrum. Its stated promise — "Reality as it is" — accompanies a grid built on rolling news, field reporting and political talk.

Coverage across the Arab world

The channel maintains news reporters in most Arab countries, with particular strength in the Levant. Its daily output combines bulletins with talk shows and analysis programmes on regional politics, the Palestinian cause, and the conflicts and social movements shaping the Middle East.

Operating from Beirut — a city with a long tradition of pluralist Arabic media — Al Mayadeen has in little more than a decade become one of the most-watched independent news brands in the region, distributed via satellite and followed widely online.
