Newsmax TV is an American conservative news and opinion channel - the television arm of Newsmax, the media company Christopher Ruddy founded as a news website in 1998 and grew into a cable, broadcast and digital operation. Broadcasting from its New York studio on Manhattan's East Side, with headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida and Washington, D.C., the channel carries news and commentary around the clock, and its channel also streams live online.

Ruddy has positioned the network as a competitor to Fox News, and much of its identity comes from that positioning: the ex-Fox hosts, the opinion-first prime time, and the audience that made the switch with them.

The Ruddy Network

Newsmax.com went online on 16 September 1998, backed by investors including the family of former CIA director William J. Casey and the publisher Richard Mellon Scaife, and grew into one of the potent forces of conservative digital media. Newsmax TV followed in June 2014, launching to 35 million satellite subscribers through DirecTV and Dish Network and claiming a reach of about 70 million households by 2019. The operation went public in March 2025, added a United Kingdom presence on Freeview in 2023, and maintains an average weekly television audience of roughly 319,000 alongside the much larger digital readership of the website and its Health and Finance verticals.

Programming and Personalities

The channel's lineup was built substantially from former Fox News hosts: Rob Schmitt, Greg Kelly, Bob Sellers and Heather Childers among them, with Greg Kelly Reports anchoring the evening opinion block. The Washington Post has described the network as a landing spot for cable news personalities in need of a new home - it aired programs from Mark Halperin and Bill O'Reilly after their departures from other networks - and the schedule blends breaking-news coverage with the commentary format the channel's audience expects. NEWSMAX2, the network's secondary channel, streams continuously, carrying live coverage and rolling news around the clock.

Coverage and Controversy

The channel's most consequential chapter came after the 2020 presidential election, when Newsmax broadcast the Trump campaign's voter-fraud allegations. The network later retracted and apologized for those claims, and the legal aftermath was substantial: a settlement with Smartmatic for 40 million dollars in September 2024, and a settlement with Dominion Voting Systems for 67 million dollars in August 2025, after a judge ruled the channel had broadcast false and defamatory statements. Ruddy's editorial policy, as he has stated it, is to be supportive of the president and his policies - and the channel's coverage of the administrations, elections and personalities of American conservative politics remains its daily product: opinion, analysis and breaking news, from New York, for the audience Fox News built.
