Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) is the national public radio and television broadcaster of the Faroe Islands. The company was formed on 1 January 2005 through the merger of the national radio network Útvarp Føroya and the television service Sjónvarp Føroya.

Licence fees, advertising and bingo

KVF is financed from several sources — television licence fees, advertising and bingo — and receives programme support from the Danish public broadcasters DR and TV 2, whose content complements the home-grown schedule.

Dagur og Vika

The broadcaster produces its own Faroese-language content, led by the news programme Dagur og Vika (Day and Week), alongside cultural and sports programmes covering the life of the islands.

A language with 50,000 speakers

Faroese is spoken by roughly 50,000 people in the islands and by a further 20,000 or so in Denmark. A national broadcaster is one of the institutions that keeps the language in daily public use, and KVF's obligation is as much linguistic as journalistic.

Radio and television together

Merging radio and television into a single company in 2005 followed the pattern set by the other Nordic public broadcasters, and it lets the islands' small newsroom serve both services with the same reporters.
