Ryongnamsan Television (Korean: 룡남산텔레비죤) is the educational television channel of North Korea, provided by the University Student TV Department of Korea Radio and Television. Broadcasting from Pyongyang, it is one of the country's four state television channels, available over the air, on Pyongyang's cable system and on the government Manbang IPTV service.
From Kaesong to an educational network
The channel began broadcasting on 1 April 1971 under the name “Kaesong”, making it one of the oldest television services in the country. It transitioned to colour broadcasting in October 1991 and, on 1 February 1997, was rebranded as the Korean Educational and Cultural Network — a relaunch associated with the 55th birthday of Kim Jong Il. It has long broadcast on channel 9 in Pyongyang in the evening hours.
Educational programming
Run by the University Student TV Department, Ryongnamsan carries educational material for students and the wider public, and since 2025 broadcasts in high definition like most of the country's channels. The channel is directed toward educational and cultural content within the state broadcasting system.
