It was February 2003, and the region was bracing for the Iraq war. Into that moment, from a new complex in Dubai Media City, Al Arabiya went on air - and within weeks its reporters were broadcasting from Baghdad while the city burned. A news channel was born in the middle of the story.

That debut set the tone. Al Arabiya - العربية, "the Arab" - was built by the MBC Group to challenge Al Jazeera's hold on Arabic news, and it did so with money, correspondents and a deliberately calm, editorially careful voice. Two decades on, it is one of the most watched news channels in the Arab world.

The Calm Voice

The channel's grid is the standard of 24-hour news - continuous editions, live crossings, political talk - but its identity is the tone: measured where competitors shout. Its studios in Dubai host the region's politicians, analysts and newsmakers, and its English-language service carries the coverage to readers beyond the Arab world.

Dubai Media City

From its base in Dubai, Al Arabiya covers the Gulf, the Levant, North Africa and the wider world for an Arabic-speaking audience that stretches from Casablanca to Baghdad. It is the flagship of the MBC news operation - the channel the region turns to when something happens.
