Korean Central Television (KCTV; Korean: 조선중앙텔레비죤) is the oldest television channel in North Korea, operated by the Korean Central Broadcasting Committee, the country's sole state-owned broadcaster. Broadcasting from Pyongyang, it officially launched in March 1963 and remains the primary channel through which the North Korean state addresses its citizens.
Six decades of state broadcasting
The service began on 3 March 1963 as the Central Television Broadcasting System of the DPRK, initially airing two hours each weekday evening from Pyongyang. Relaunched as Korean Central Television in 1973, it introduced colour telecasts from 1974 and began full-time colour broadcasting in 1977. The channel carried the 1980 Summer Olympics by satellite, moved to widescreen broadcasting in 2017, and today transmits in high definition.
Terrestrial, satellite and online
KCTV is broadcast terrestrially via the Pyongyang TV Tower, streamed through the government-run Manbang internet television service, and uplinked via satellite, which also carries it beyond North Korea's borders. Its schedule mixes news, films, ideological programming and coverage of the country's leadership and national events.
