Alhurra (Arabic for “The Free One”) is the flagship news brand of Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN), a non-profit media organisation funded through a U.S. Agency for Global Media grant. Launched in 2004, Alhurra developed Arabic-language reporting and analysis about the Middle East, the United States and international affairs. MBN describes its mission as providing Arabic-first news and commentary connecting audiences in the Middle East and the United States.

From television to digital media

Alhurra originally operated as a satellite television network serving audiences across the Middle East and North Africa. In 2025, MBN suspended the television broadcast amid a funding crisis and shifted its operations toward a digital-first model. Alhurra’s website continues to publish Arabic and English reporting, short videos, interviews, podcasts and other multimedia journalism. The current service should therefore be understood primarily as a digital news outlet, not as a confirmed live satellite channel.

News and analysis

Coverage includes regional affairs, U.S. policy and international developments. MBN says its editorial work includes reporting and commentary, with digital products such as newsletters, video series and social media updates. Alhurra’s programme and content formats have changed over time, so older television schedules and satellite listings may no longer reflect the service available today.
