RASD TV is the state-owned satellite and terrestrial public-service television broadcaster of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), owned by the Polisario Front. Its offices are located in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf Province, Algeria.
Broadcasting from the refugee camps
The channel was established in February 2004, but harsh conditions in the camps delayed regular broadcasting until 20 May 2009, after test transmissions via the Hispasat satellite from 2008. It broadcasts daily by terrestrial signal for the Western Sahara territory and the refugee camps, and by satellite for audiences across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
News, documentaries and culture in three languages
RASD TV's content includes newscasts, interviews, historical documentaries and cultural programmes, produced mostly in Hassaniya and Modern Standard Arabic, with some programming in Spanish. Its online service carries telediarios (newscasts), reports, testimonies, solidarity programming and a Spanish-language section, reflecting the bilingual character of Sahrawi public life. The broadcaster operates alongside its sister service, Radio Nacional de la RASD, and the Sahara Press Service.
