Abu Dhabi TV (قناة أبوظبي) is the flagship television channel of Abu Dhabi Media, broadcasting from the capital of the United Arab Emirates. One of the oldest television services in the Gulf, it first went on air on 4 August 1969, and today presents news bulletins every three hours alongside drama, entertainment and cultural programmes, reaching the Arab world as well as Europe, the Americas and Australia.
From Terrestrial Beginnings to the Satellite Era
The station began with greyscale broadcasts using equipment from Thomson Television International, carried terrestrially on VHF channel 5 in Abu Dhabi, with a relay in Al Ain added in October 1971. Colour broadcasting in PAL began on 4 December 1974. For its first 23 years the service was terrestrial only, until the Abu Dhabi TV satellite channel began regular broadcasts on Arabsat on 15 November 1992. A relaunch on 30 January 2000 aimed the channel at the Arabic-speaking diaspora, where it competed with MBC and Dubai TV; the game show Waznak Dahab became one of its most popular programmes before ending with the start of the Iraq War. On 6 October 2008 the channel was rebranded as Abu Dhabi Al Oula.
Part of Abu Dhabi Media
The channel has belonged to Abu Dhabi Media since February 2006, following the dissolution of the Ministry of Information and Culture. Its programmes are distributed on satellite and through the group's partnership with the STARZPLAY platform, which carries Abu Dhabi Media Network series, films and sport online.
