Halk TV is a Turkish free-to-air nationwide news channel, broadcasting from Istanbul. Established in 2005, it is known for its closeness to the Republican People's Party (CHP) and as one of the country's few opposition-leaning television newsrooms.

A Channel Close to the Opposition

Halk TV was founded in 2005 by former CHP accountant Mahmut Yıldız, with funding from the party; the link was cut in 2011 under the new CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, causing severe financial difficulties. The 2013 Gezi Park protests made the channel's name: it was among the few Turkish stations to cover the events live, for which the regulator RTÜK fined it for allegedly harming the development of children and young people. In early 2020 the channel was sold to the businessman Cafer Mahiroğlu. In January 2025 its chief editor Serhan Asker, presenter Seda Selek and journalist Barış Pehlivan were detained after the station aired a phone conversation with a court-appointed expert.

The October 2026 Trustee Takeover

On 14 October 2026 Turkish authorities raided Halk TV's Istanbul headquarters and appointed a state trustee to take over the channel's administration, suspending its broadcast. The operation was part of a financial-crime investigation into owner Cafer Mahiroğlu - suspected of bribery, bid rigging and money laundering - who was abroad and had faced an arrest warrant since June 2025; eleven people were detained. Editor-in-chief Suat Toktaş unsuccessfully asked to continue the live broadcast. The takeover was condemned by opposition leader Özgür Özel, other opposition parties, the Istanbul Bar Association and press unions.

The Grid Before the Suspension

The channel's day was built around Günaydın Türkiye and Gün Doğarken in the morning, Para Siyaset and the Haber Masası midday desk, the afternoon Parantez, the flagship Halk Ana Haber at 18:00 and Sansürsüz in the evening, distributed on Digiturk, D-Smart, Turkcell TV+ and BluTV.
