DD News Live Stream

DD News is an Indian free-to-air Hindi-language public news channel owned and operated by Doordarshan, the television division of Prasar Bharati under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It holds a unique position in Indian broadcasting as the country's only 24-hour news channel available on both terrestrial and satellite platforms, reaching viewers well beyond the cable and DTH footprint.

History

Doordarshan's first dedicated news and current affairs venture was DD CNNi, launched in 1995 in partnership with CNN. The modern DD News was created by converting the entertainment channel DD Metro into a 24-hour news service: the Union Cabinet approved the proposal on 3 October 2003 and DD News went on air on 3 November 2003. In its initial years its terrestrial signal covered 21.6 percent of India's area and 44.9 percent of its population. In January 2019 Prasar Bharati made DD News a fully Hindi-facing channel, while sister channel DD India took over English news and current affairs. On 20 April 2024 the channel replaced its long-running red logo with a saffron-orange one, a rebranding that drew public debate.

DD News Programs

DD News is built around rolling live news bulletins - at its peak more than 16 hours of live output a day in Hindi, English, Sanskrit and Urdu, later consolidated in Hindi. A signature feature is Vaarta, a news bulletin in Sanskrit, a format no other Indian news channel offers. The channel also carries financial and market information from the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange as well as commodity exchanges including NCDEX and MCX. Over the years its bulletins have been read by some of Indian television's best-known news anchors, including Pratima Puri, Salma Sultana, Shammi Narang, Sarla Maheshwari and Neelum Sharma.

Distribution

Besides its terrestrial and satellite carriage, DD News has had a dedicated mobile application since 7 May 2015, launched by then Minister of Information and Broadcasting Arun Jaitley, delivering channel news around the clock. The service is funded through Prasar Bharati as part of India's public broadcasting system.
