M1 TV Live Stream

M1 is the flagship television channel of Hungary's public media and the oldest television service in the country. Officially launched on 1 May 1957, it spent most of its history as a generalist channel, then more than a decade as a 24-hour news network, and after a public restructuring in 2026 it returned to a schedule built around Hungarian film and television classics with daily newscasts. The channel's live stream continues to carry the same public-service mix.

The First Hungarian Channel

Hungarian television began with a test broadcast on 15 December 1953, and M1 started operation on 23 February 1957 before its official launch with the May Day ceremony of 1 May 1957. Regular broadcasting followed from 1958, the first color transmission took place in 1969, and the channel has been on air every day of the week since 1989. As the flagship of Magyar Televízió it was joined over the years by sister channels: M2 in 1971, later transformed into a children's channel, the sports channel M4 Sport in 2015 and the cultural M5 in 2016. Since 2011 the channel has operated within MTVA, the fund managing Hungary's public media assets.

The News Channel Years

On 15 March 2015 M1 was converted into a 24-hour news channel. Entertainment programming moved to the Duna channel, and the schedule was rebuilt around the flagship newscast Híradó, the morning show Ma reggel and rolling half-hourly news blocks, with condensed news editions in English, German, Russian and Chinese broadcast once a day. A further identity refresh followed on 15 March 2020.

The 2026 Reset

At 16:00 on 7 July 2026 the channel's programming was suspended and replaced by an on-screen message declaring that public media "should not lie" and apologizing for the years in which it had done so; the channel's director was removed by the interim chairman of MTVA. Broadcasting resumed the same evening at 19:56 with A tanú (The Witness), the classic Hungarian satire, opening a temporary schedule of Hungarian film and television classics. A revamped schedule followed on 18 July 2026, pairing classic movies with popular Hungarian dramas and sitcoms, and full news broadcasts returned on 20 August 2026 from a new studio: Híradó now airs at noon and at 19:30, while sports news reappeared under its historic name TeleSport.

A Programming Legacy

Across seven decades M1 introduced Hungarian viewers to Szerencsekerék, the Hungarian version of Wheel of Fortune, Mindent Vagy Semmit!, the local adaptation of Jeopardy!, the long-running soap opera Szomszédok (Neighbours), the first Hungarian sitcom Kinevezés és kinevezése (1984-1987), the foreign-affairs magazine Panoráma, the science and technology magazine Delta and the children's block Walt Disney bemutatja (1991-1998). The current schedule draws heavily on that archive, with weekend programming dedicated to influential Hungarian directors and actors.
