Canal 44 (XHUDG-TDT, since January 2022 XHCPCT-TDT) is the television network of the Universidad de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. Broadcasting to the Guadalajara metropolitan area from a transmitter on Cerro del Cuatro in Tlaquepaque, with additional transmitters in Ciudad Guzman, Lagos de Moreno and Puerto Vallarta, it forms - together with the university's eight-station radio network - the Sistema Universitario de Radio y Television.
A Twenty-Year Permit Battle
The Universidad de Guadalajara first sought a television permit in 1991 and was denied; the frequency went instead to Jalisco's state television system. After further attempts in 1995 and 1997, and a 2001 agreement under which the university supplied programmes to Televisa's local channel 4, the Cofetel regulator finally awarded a non-commercial television permit on 27 January 2010. Canal 44 went on air on 31 January 2011 with a staff of one hundred, making the UDG the sixth university in Mexico with its own television station. Digital test transmissions began in November 2013, the analogue signal was switched off on 16 December 2015, and until the end of 2016 the station was also seen over the air in Los Angeles as a subchannel of KVMD.
University Television for Jalisco
The schedule combines the newsroom's UDG Noticias bulletins - morning, afternoon and evening editions, plus the sports bulletin - with international news partnerships: DW Noticias and the Capsulas Deutsche Welle from Germany, and the Noticiero NCC science newscast. University and city life fill the grid through magazines such as Minuto 44, Ruta 44, En Directo, Talento Deportivo, Desde el Zoologico and Cultura en Movimiento, alongside cultural series like Eco Latinoamerica and Los Juicios de Mexico.
