News 12 Westchester is the county channel of the News 12 Networks, covering the suburbs immediately north of New York City. It reports from Yonkers, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains and the smaller villages, with weather, traffic and public safety coverage throughout the day.

Westchester is one of the wealthiest counties in the country and one of the most unequal, and its agenda reflects both: property taxes and school budgets, housing and zoning, the courts and county government, and the commuter railways that carry residents into Manhattan.

Transport is the constant subject. The Metro-North lines, the Saw Mill River and Hutchinson River parkways and the Cross County connect the county to the city, and delays on any of them are reported as they develop, particularly in winter weather.

The Network

News 12 operates as part of the News 12 Networks, a chain of regional cable news services in the New York metropolitan area under Optimum Communications. The group broadcasts continuously and concentrates on the outer boroughs, the suburbs to the north and the counties across the Hudson. Cablevision created the first channel of the group on Long Island on 15 December 1986, the earliest twenty-four-hour regional cable news service in the United States, and extended the format to the rest of its territory afterwards. Altice USA took the network on with its purchase of Cablevision in 2016.

Access

The website and mobile app moved behind a subscription in December 2005 for readers outside the viewing area, remaining free to Optimum, Spectrum and Xfinity subscribers, and the policy was used in advertising against satellite and telephone-company television. Newspaper reports in October 2016 described anchor desks and studio operations moving to New Jersey and Long Island during the consolidation of the Westchester and Connecticut services.
