The Black News Channel, known as BNC, was an American pay television news network aimed at African American audiences. It was based in Tallahassee, Florida, and launched on 10 February 2020, co-founded by the television executive Bob Brillante and the former congressman J. C. Watts, who also served as chairman.
Origins
J. C. Watts had planned a network focused on black American cultural topics since the mid-2000s, going through several unsuccessful rounds of fundraising. In the mid-2010s a partnership was announced with the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University, where the station was to be housed, although the channel eventually launched independently of the school in a building on Killearn Center Boulevard.
The launch was announced in November 2018 for the following year, then pushed from 15 November 2019 to 6 January 2020 and finally to February 2020.
Closure and Successor
The network filed for bankruptcy in March 2022 and was bought by Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios. The sale completed on 1 August 2022, and BNC was merged into TheGrio TV, the over-the-air network Allen's company already owned, which added news and commentary to its existing schedule.
The Black News Channel therefore no longer exists as a separate service, and its place in the market was taken by TheGrio's television operation.
Stream
A feed still distributed under the BNC name continues to be carried through the Amagi platform and appears in streaming line-ups, delivering news programming to internet audiences in the United States.
