Unicanal Live Stream
Unicanal is a Paraguayan television network owned and operated by Grupo JBB, which also owns Trece. Its history reaches back further than most of the country's channels: it began on 15 September 1989 as the in-house channel of the cable company CVC, carried on channel 4 of that system.
From TV Cinema to Unicanal
From 1993 the service was branded TV Cinema, while channel 8 carried a sister children's channel called Kablito, which no longer operates. It took its present name in 1996 and remained tied to the leading cable operator of the day, CVC, later Multicanal, then Cablevisión and now Tigo, until 2015.
During the Multicanal period the channel hired journalists from Artear to strengthen its news operation, reportedly becoming one of the most-watched services in Paraguay. It also carried the El Trece variety show Showmatch, and in January 2014 signed a deal for a Paraguayan version of Next Top Model as it sought to compete in the local market.
Under Grupo JBB
In 2015 the channel was sold to Grupo JBB, a transaction that allowed Tigo to invest in the Paraguayan version of Tigo Sports. Under the new owner it ended the exclusivity agreement it had kept with Tigo for more than twenty-five years: on 15 September 2015 it joined Claro TV on channel 20, and on 28 December of that year it announced more local production for 2016 and stopped relaying El Trece programming. In May 2016 it acquired the rights to the Copa América Centenario.
High Definition
On 30 March 2017 Unicanal announced an HD feed, initially on Tigo Star channel 708. The channel now broadcasts over the air as well as by cable, and its newsroom publishes through unicanal.com.py with continuous online streaming.
