BBC Four does not exist in the morning. It comes on at seven in the evening and runs until four in the morning - a channel that lives entirely in the evening, for an audience that wants its television slow, serious and curious.

The channel launched on 2 March 2002 as the BBC's home of ideas, and its remit is written into its licence: at least 100 hours of new arts and music programming every year, 110 hours of new factual content, and twenty international film premieres.
