Salt and Light TV Live Stream
Canada's national Catholic television network takes its name from the theme of World Youth Day 2002, held in Toronto: "You are the salt of the earth... you are the light of the world". Launched in July 2003, Salt and Light TV operates as a 24-hour channel owned by the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation, a registered charity based in Toronto, and its signal reaches Catholic audiences across Canada and far beyond it.
From World Youth Day to a National Catholic Channel
The licence behind the channel was granted by the CRTC in November 2001 for a service originally called Inner Peace Television Network. Ownership soon passed to a consortium built around St. Joseph Printing, whose founder, Gaetano Gagliano, created the charitable foundation that put Salt and Light on air in July 2003. The network's declared mission is to proclaim Jesus Christ and the joy of the Gospel in Canada and around the world through modern media, and a high-definition feed was introduced in June 2017.
Founding chief executive Father Thomas Rosica, who had directed World Youth Day 2002 nationally, led the network until 2019 and was followed by Jesuit Father Alan J. Fogarty (2020-2023) and interim chief Alexander Du. Since 1 December 2024 the foundation has been headed by Father Haig Chahinian.
Sunday Mass from Montreal's Cathedral Basilica
The anchor of the schedule is the live broadcast of Holy Mass from the Cathedral-Basilica of Mary, Queen of the World in Montreal, celebrated with the cooperation of Archbishop Christian Lépine and repeated in the afternoon for western time zones. Built between 1870 and 1894 as a smaller-scale replica of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the cathedral is one of the landmarks of Canadian Catholic heritage, and Mass intentions sent in by viewers are announced at its altar during the televised liturgy.
Alongside the Sunday broadcast, the network covers the daily and Sunday Mass, devotional prayers, the rosary and novenas, and carries live coverage of Vatican events and the major moments of the Church's year.
The SLHour, Explainers and the Saints
The SLHour, the long-running weekly radio hour and podcast hosted by Deacon Pedro Guevara, has passed 630 episodes; each edition combines interviews with Catholic writers and religious, the recurring Church for Dummies segment with Billy Chan, and music by Christian artists. Shorter digital formats explain the faith in plain language, from the Behold Explainer series, with episodes such as "What is Excommunication?", to daily videos marking the feast days of the saints and monthly reflections on the Pope's prayer intentions.
Documentaries and On-Location Coverage
Long-form productions such as The Francis Impact and Witnesses of Hope reflect the network's documentary tradition, while its news teams report from events across North America, including interviews with cardinals, bishops and lay leaders recorded at the Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention.
English, French, Cantonese and Mandarin
Programs are produced in English and in French, where the service carries the Sel + Lumière Média brand, as well as in Cantonese and Mandarin for Chinese Catholic communities. At launch in 2003 the channel also aired Italian, Spanish and Portuguese programs, and multilingual outreach remains part of its identity.
A 24-Hour Channel That Streams Live Online
Salt and Light operates a round-the-clock television channel distributed by cable and satellite carriers, and its schedule also streams live online. The foundation's on-demand platform, Salt + Light Plus, collects the network's documentaries, series and liturgical broadcasts in a single library, audio programs reach podcast platforms and SiriusXM, and the live stream carries Mass, devotions and programs to viewers in Canada and around the world.
