Qatar TV 2 is a channel of Qatar Media Corporation (QMC). Its earlier incarnation was the Second Program, launched by Qatar Television in 1982 and known as Channel 37 because of its broadcast frequency. That version mainly served expatriates in Qatar and broadcast chiefly in English. Qatar TV 2’s current version, relaunched by QMC on July 23, 2020, mainly airs archive material from Qatar Television.

From Channel 37 to Qatar TV 2

The original Second Program built a schedule around English-language content. By the early 1990s, it generally broadcast from late afternoon until midnight, with American series and Indian series and films among its main offerings. The channel closed on July 27, 2014. These details refer to the former service and should not be confused with the present channel’s archive-based format.

QMC brought Qatar TV 2 back in 2020 with a different role: its current version primarily airs archived Qatar TV programmes. This links the channel to the national broadcaster’s historical productions rather than the foreign-series schedule associated with Channel 37. Although QMC discussed reviving Channel 37 as a separate service in 2021, that plan is distinct from the 2020 Qatar TV 2 relaunch. Viewers looking for Qatar TV 2 online television should note this difference between the former expat-oriented channel and the archive-focused service today.
