Canal Once Live Stream

Canal Once is Mexico's educational television network - the public channel of the Instituto Politecnico Nacional, on the air since 2 March 1959 and today reaching more than seventy percent of the national territory. From its main station XEIPN-TDT in Mexico City, the channel carries news, documentaries, culture and educational programming with a public-service mandate, and its signal also streams live online.

Few broadcasters in Latin America carry this pedigree: the first educational and cultural television station in Mexico, and the oldest university-broadcaster tradition on the continent, still on the air with its original mission.

Born in a Classroom

The channel's first transmission, at six in the evening on Monday 2 March 1959, was a mathematics class taught by engineer Vianey Vergara Cedeño from a small studio at the institute's Casco de Santo Tomás campus - a fitting birth for a station whose founders, Alejo Peralta and Eugenio Mendez Docurro, built it as a non-commercial educational service. The equipment was designed and constructed by the institute itself, the signal carried by a 5 kW transmitter so limited that engineering students fabricated small antennas and gifted them to households so viewers could tune in. In 1969 the transmitter moved to Cerro del Chiquihuite to reach the whole Valley of Mexico, and by the end of the 1960s the channel had converted its equipment to color.

From the Valley to the Nation

Originally limited to the Valley of Mexico, Canal Once extended its reach through agreements with state governments and its own relay network, and on 22 March 2012 it joined the OPMA/SPR public network - giving the channel national coverage of more than seventy percent of the territory and satellite reach into the United States. Through its changes of name - Once TV from 1996, Once TV Mexico from 2008, back to Canal Once in November 2013 - the station has kept the IPN identity as an educational broadcaster: documentary and cultural production, science and public-affairs programming, news and children education, the kind of schedule a commercial grid does not program.

The IPN Signal, Streaming

Today the channel stylizes itself simply as once - eleven - and its operation runs across broadcast, cable, satellite and its own digital platform, where the live signal and the archive carry the schedule to Mexico and the diaspora. Four decades of satellites and relays later, the mission has not moved: the mathematics class that opened the channel in 1959 is still the model - television that teaches, from Mexico City to the whole country.
