Eri-TV 1 is the flagship channel of Eri-TV, the state-owned television network of Eritrea. Launched in January 1993, two years after the country's de facto independence, the network broadcasts around the clock from Asmara and operates as the sole domestic television broadcaster in Eritrea, governed and funded by the Eritrean Ministry of Information.

Programming in Eritrea's languages

Eri-TV 1's schedule is built around news and current affairs, music, dramas and both domestic and international films. The channel broadcasts primarily in Tigrinya, Arabic, Tigre and English, with additional programmes in Italian, Amharic and Somali — a language policy that reflects Eritrea's multi-ethnic makeup and the network's commitment to equal airtime for the country's spoken languages.

From 1 kW transmitter to international broadcaster

Eri-TV began with a 1 kW transmitter that barely covered Asmara, installed with the help of Canadian technicians. In 2003 the network upgraded to 5 kW, launched relay stations across the country and started satellite and internet broadcasting for the Eritrean diaspora; digital broadcasting followed in 2004. Today Eri-TV 1 reaches international audiences via satellite alongside its sister radio station, Dimtsi Hafash, and is followed by an estimated one to two million viewers each week outside Eritrea.

A state network in the Eritrean media system

As Eritrea's only television network, Eri-TV carries the country's public service output across its channels: Eri-TV 1 for general programming, Eri-TV 2 for educational content in English, mathematics and science, and Eri-TV 3 for national and international sports news.
