ZNS-TV (Zephyr Nassau Sunshine) is the national television broadcaster of the Bahamas, operated by the state-owned Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB). Its transmitters serving Nassau and Freeport make it the country's only over-the-air television service, while households on the remaining islands receive the channel through the national cable network.

From hurricane radio to national television

The broadcaster's history goes back to 1937, when ZNS radio was founded to deliver hurricane warnings across the archipelago, broadcasting two hours a day with news and musical programming drawn from the BBC and Nassau sources. Television arrived four decades later: ZNS-TV launched in Nassau on New Providence in 1977, before which viewers in the Bahamas could only receive stations from the United States. Colour broadcasting began in 1983, and the early schedule mixed sitcoms, dramas, sports and movies with news.

A public affairs mandate

In 1992 the station changed course, dropping entertainment formats in favour of public affairs programming, a direction reinforced by the corporation's transition to a public broadcasting service. A major restructuring in October 2010 reduced staff by around 80 positions, and in 2011 ZNS-TV announced plans to convert to ATSC digital terrestrial transmission with support for a mobile television feed. In 2017 the Freeport repeater ZNS-TV-1 was shut down and the power of the remaining Nassau transmitter substantially reduced.

The wider ZNS family

ZNS-TV shares its brand with the Broadcasting Corporation's radio network, one of the oldest broadcasting institutions in the Caribbean: ZNS-1 on AM 1540, a clear-channel station, with its repeater on 104.5 FM, ZNS-2 on AM 1240, Inspiration 107.9 FM in Nassau, and ZNS-3 on AM 810 and Power 104.5 FM in Freeport. The television channel remains the flagship platform of a public broadcaster whose role in Bahamian life stretches from hurricane alerting in the 1930s to national news, culture and public affairs today.
