BBC News Arabic is the BBC World Service’s Arabic-language television service for audiences across the Middle East, North Africa and the wider Arabic-speaking world. The TV channel launched on 11 March 2008, initially broadcasting for 12 hours a day before moving to a 24-hour schedule in January 2009. It extended a BBC Arabic service whose radio broadcasts began in 1938, bringing the newsroom’s reporting to television as well as digital platforms.
News, discussion and specialist programmes
BBC News Arabic’s schedule combines regular news bulletins with interviews, audience discussion and subject-focused features. Recent listings include Nuqtat Hewar (Talking Point), an interactive forum on current issues; 4Tech (4Tech), covering technology and innovation; and BBC Xtra (BBC Extra), which focuses on human-interest stories for younger Arabic-speaking audiences. The schedule also features Trending (Trending), Dars (Lesson) and Fan Lil-Hayat (Art for Life), alongside BBC News bulletins.
A multilingual World Service newsroom
The channel is part of the BBC’s international news operation and draws on the World Service’s reporting network. Its Arabic output covers regional and international developments, with interviews and analysis providing context beyond headline updates. Television, radio and online television form part of the service’s wider Arabic-language offer, which has developed from its original radio operation into a multimedia newsroom.
