Tsargrad TV - Царьград ТВ - is a Russian information channel founded in 2015 by the businessman Konstantin Malofeyev. It calls itself the first Russian conservative information and analytical television channel, and its main studio occupies the Central Telegraph building in Moscow.

Name, date and patron

The channel was registered with Roskomnadzor on 18 September 2014 and took its name from the old Slavonic word for Constantinople, Tsargrad. A broadcasting licence followed on 12 April 2015, and the editorial team chose to go on air on 21 November 2015, the feast of the Synaxis of the Archangel Michael - the channel's heavenly patron. That date is still marked as its birthday. Full broadcasting began in January 2016, at Epiphany.

From cable to the internet

Tsargrad was carried in the packages of several cable operators with a reach of some 20 million people, but at the end of 2017 it announced that linear television would stop on 1 December and that editorial work would move to the internet. The decision followed a year in which the site drew 13 million visitors, with an average age of 35. Tsargrad TV belonged to the wider Tsargrad media group, which included more than a dozen websites.

What the channel stands for

The channel speaks from conservative, nationalist and monarchist positions and works closely with Russian public, cultural and religious organisations, among them the Russian Orthodox Church. Its output is built on public affairs and cultural discussion rather than entertainment: talk formats, comment on domestic and foreign policy, and programmes on history, faith and national identity. By May 2019 it stood among the five most visited Russian television websites, and the channel has continued as an internet broadcaster since leaving cable.
