Transylvanian Hungarian Television (EMT) is the only national Hungarian language television channel in Romania. EMT was created by the Jenő Janovics Foundation and started broadcasting on a pilot basis on 1 July 2008 on a terrestrial frequency in Târgu Mures. Initially, the broadcast was only available in and around Tirgu Mures, but since 17 May 2010, EMT's broadcast has been available nationwide in Telekom's Hungarian package.
EMT's mission is to inform and entertain the Hungarian community in Transylvania in Hungarian. The channel's programmes cover a variety of topics, including news, political and public affairs magazines, cultural and entertainment programmes, documentaries and series. EMT plays an important role in the dissemination of Hungarian language media in Romania and contributes to the preservation and promotion of Hungarian culture.
EMT originally broadcast via analogue terrestrial transmission in and around Târgu Mures and in and around Sfântu Gheorghe. However, thanks to technological developments, EMT's broadcasts are now available not only on terrestrial frequencies but also on online platforms. This allows EMT viewers to follow the broadcast live anytime and anywhere, even via their smartphones or computers.
EMT's popularity has grown steadily over the years, with more and more content in Hungarian. The channel has done a lot to improve media access for the Hungarian community in Transylvania and has also supported and broadcast a number of community events.
