KTV 1 Live Stream
KTV 1 is the flagship channel of Kuwait Television, the state-run broadcaster operated by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information. Broadcasting since 15 November 1961, it was the first television station in the Arabian Peninsula, and it remains the country's generalist home for news, cultural and religious programming, drama and entertainment in Arabic.
The Peninsula's First Television
Kuwaiti television grew out of a 100-watt transmitter set up around 1959-1960 by the merchant Murad Behbehani, an RCA agent who wanted to encourage the sale of television sets. Kuwait Television took over his station and began regular broadcasting on 15 November 1961 from the eastern district of Kuwait City, in black and white, four hours a day. In the early 1970s it ran the programme Know Your Enemy, covering Israeli affairs at a time when other Arab broadcasters refused the subject. Colour television in the PAL system arrived in March 1974 for the first Arabian Gulf Cup in Bahrain, and in 1978 the broadcaster moved to new premises whose largest studio, 800 square metres, was used for Iftah Ya Simsim, the Arabic adaptation of Sesame Street.
One Channel of a Large Family
Today Kuwait Television runs a family of channels: alongside KTV 1 there are Channel 2, the Sport and Sport 2 channels, the Kids Channel, Al Akhbar for news, Al Qurain, Al Araby, Ithra', the satellite Al Majles, Thalik Bilbayt, Drama and Masriya. KTV 1 remains the generalist flagship of the group.
The Streaming Era
In May 2024 the broadcaster launched 51 Kuwait, a streaming platform named after Kuwait's first radio broadcast in May 1951, carrying all KTV shows and live access to every Kuwait TV channel. In July of the same year the group added the Al Akhbar Channel, taking over international news coverage.
