TG4 is Ireland's Irish-language free-to-air public service television channel. It launched on 31 October 1996 and remains a public broadcaster for Irish-language programming and culture.

The channel's schedule is organised around documentaries, music, drama, current affairs, entertainment, sport, lifestyle and children's programming. Its children's strand is branded Cúla4.

Public-service remit

TG4's role is broader than entertainment: it supports the Irish language on screen, carries national and international sport, and provides current-affairs and documentary programming for Irish-speaking and wider Irish audiences.

Music and cultural performance are a visible part of the schedule alongside drama and factual programming. This mix reflects TG4's position as a public-service channel with a specific linguistic and cultural mission.

TG4 is therefore best understood as Ireland's dedicated Irish-language television service, combining news, sport, culture, entertainment and children's programming under one national channel brand.
