Al Sharqiya (Arabic: الشرقية, "The Eastern One") is an Iraqi Arabic-language satellite television channel headquartered in Baghdad. Launched in March 2004, with regular transmission beginning on 4 May 2004, it is Iraq's first privately owned satellite channel and remains one of the country's best-known commercial broadcasters.

Founder and Position

The station was founded by Saad al-Bazzaz, the Baghdad and Dubai-based Iraqi media entrepreneur who also serves as editor-in-chief of the newspaper Azzaman. Al Sharqiya built its reputation on a blend of news, current affairs and satire, and brought some of Iraq's first reality television programmes to the screen, winning a growing audience in a market long shaped by state broadcasters and pan-Arab news channels.

Programmes

The entertainment and talk line-up includes the morning show Sabah Alsharqiya, the talk format Kalam Alnaas, Thahirat Aljuma and Atraf Alhadith, a programme of dialogues on culture, art and literature. Sport appears through Penalty and the World Cup Studio, with drama series such as Ahl Almadina and Jeel Jadid completing the grid. The sister service AlSharqiya News runs around the clock, led by Alhassad with comprehensive news coverage of Iraq and the world, Muwajaha, On the Edge and A Matter of Question.

Distribution

Al Sharqiya broadcasts in high definition to viewers worldwide via satellite and the internet, operating two live services - AlSharqiya and AlSharqiya News - together with a bilingual website, podcasts and web shows.
