Al Sharqiya News is the 24-hour news service of Al Sharqiya, Iraq's first privately owned satellite channel, founded by the media entrepreneur Saad al-Bazzaz. Broadcasting from Baghdad, it covers Iraqi, regional and international news.
Iraq's first private satellite channel
Al Sharqiya began in 2004, a year after the fall of Saddam Hussein's government, when private broadcasting became possible in Iraq. It built a national reputation on news and on Iraqi-made drama, and the news channel is the part of that group devoted to continuous coverage.
Alhassad and Muwajaha
The grid is built on rolling news and current affairs: Alhassad delivers comprehensive coverage of Iraq and the world, Muwajaha is the confrontation and debate format, and On the Edge and A Matter of Question examine the day's issues.
Washington Post and the social strands
Washington Post follows American affairs, while Qeel w Qal and Tabaat Baghdad cover social and cultural topics, and Lqaa Khass hosts special interviews.
A newsroom in Baghdad
The channel keeps correspondents in Iraqi cities and abroad, and its reporting is part of the country's post-2003 media landscape, in which private stations compete with the state network for the national audience.
