C-SPAN is America's public affairs network - the cable-industry-funded service that has carried the unfiltered business of the United States Congress, and the conversations of Washington, to television screens since 1979.

Gavel to Gavel

Founded by cable executive Brian Lamb as the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, C-SPAN made its name with a simple radical idea: show the House of Representatives at work, from gavel to gavel, with no commentary. Senate coverage followed, and today the three C-SPAN channels split the duty - the flagship network for floor proceedings and daily public affairs, C-SPAN2 for the Senate and Book TV, and C-SPAN3 for history programming and alternate live events.

Washington Journal and the Daily Conversation

Each weekday morning, Washington Journal opens the phone lines for three hours of direct calls from viewers across the political spectrum, joined by journalists, officials and policy experts. The rest of the day follows the capital's calendar: congressional hearings, White House briefings, campaign events, candidate debates, think-tank panels and, in season, the road trips of the campaign bus.

Books and American History

Weekends on C-SPAN2 belong to Book TV, with author interviews, book fairs and history-heavy nonfiction programming, while C-SPAN3's American History TV carries lectures, archival series and visits to historic sites. Together the networks function as a rolling record of the country's public life, archived program by program on the network's video library.
