BTV World is the international service of Bangladesh Television (BTV), Bangladesh's state broadcaster. BTV's official history says the channel launched on 11 April 2004 to carry its programmes abroad, with BTV World broadcasts distributed by satellite. The same institutional history records BTV's first pilot transmission in Dhaka on 25 December 1964, its renaming as Bangladesh Television in 1972 and the move to its Rampura television center in 1975.

Programming for international viewers

BTV World extends the national broadcaster's Bengali-language output beyond Bangladesh. Its programming mix includes news bulletins, drama, television serials, cultural programmes and entertainment. These categories reflect the broad BTV schedule carried through its international channel, combining information and locally produced television content.

Satellite and online distribution

BTV's institutional history states that satellite distribution of its programmes became a 24-hour service in November 2012, and that IPTV, mobile TV and web TV access followed in 2013. It also identifies BTV World as the channel created to send BTV programming to audiences abroad. This gives BTV World a satellite role as well as an online television presence for viewers following Bengali-language broadcasts outside the country.

Bangladesh Television's wider reach

The BTV history page reports that terrestrial relay facilities reach 95 percent of the country's population. Its television output is produced and broadcast from Dhaka and Chattogram, while BTV World carries the service beyond that domestic network. Together, these facts place the international channel within a larger public broadcaster with decades of television history.
