SABC Lehae is a multilingual news service from South African public broadcaster SABC. Designed for audiences beyond pay television, the channel was announced as a 24 hour news option for digital terrestrial and direct to home distribution. The broadcaster later positioned it on SABC+ and DTT, with reporting intended to reflect communities across the country.

A multilingual public service channel

The SABC describes SABC Lehae as a multilingual 24 hour news channel. Its public service remit gives audiences access to news in local languages, while the broadcaster also announced the addition of English to the service. SABC has included Lehae on its SABC+ platform and in its development of digital terrestrial news distribution.

Breakfast and language programming

The SABC annual report records the launch of Ekhaya Jikelele, an Nguni morning breakfast show broadcast in isiZulu and isiXhosa. The same report notes changes to Pitso and Maambiwa in the parliamentary content slot. These programme details show how Lehae combines news with language specific formats for different audiences.

News for communities across South Africa

SABC has described Lehae as a source of community focused multilingual coverage, including in its public information about coverage of the G20 Summit in South Africa. The broadcaster’s annual reporting also describes Lehae as a news channel on SABC+ and documents its development as a live digital terrestrial service. Together, these updates place the channel within the SABC’s wider news operation and its effort to serve audiences through both online and terrestrial platforms.
