News 12 Brooklyn is the borough channel of the News 12 Networks, covering Kings County from Coney Island and Brighton Beach to Williamsburg, Bushwick and Brownsville, with neighbourhood reporting, weather, transit and public safety through the day.

Brooklyn is the most populous of the five boroughs, and the newsroom works at the scale that implies: schools and housing, small business and the waterfront, the courts and the precincts, and the cultural life of a borough with its own museums, theatres and music scene.

Transport is a standing subject. The borough depends on a dense subway network and on bus routes that cross it east to west, and disruptions on either are reported as they happen, along with conditions on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Belt Parkway.

The Network

News 12 belongs to a chain of regional cable newsrooms covering the New York metropolitan area for Optimum Communications. The channels broadcast continuously and leave Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island to others, serving the outer boroughs, the northern suburbs and neighbouring states instead. News 12 Long Island went on air on 15 December 1986, the creation of Cablevision and the first twenty-four-hour regional cable news service in the United States. Further channels followed as Cablevision expanded, and the network passed to Altice USA with the 2016 acquisition of the company.

Access

A subscription wall introduced in December 2005 charged readers outside the viewing area for the network's website and app, while keeping the site free for Optimum, Spectrum and Xfinity subscribers. The rule was used in advertising against satellite and telephone-company television. Reporting in October 2016 described anchor desks and studio work moving to New Jersey and Long Island as the Westchester and Connecticut operations were consolidated, with local newsrooms remaining where they were.
