CBS News Chicago Live Stream
CBS News Chicago is the local streaming news service built around WBBM-TV, channel 2, the CBS station in Chicago, Illinois. The station maintains studios on West Washington Street in the Loop and transmits from atop the Willis Tower, the city's tallest building and the mast that carries most of its television signals.
The Station
The station's history begins in 1940, when Balaban and Katz, a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures, signed on experimental station W9XBK, the first all-electronic television facility in Chicago. The company hired the television pioneer William C. Eddy away from RCA's experimental station in New York to establish it, and during the war the W9XBK facilities served as a prototype school for training Navy electronics technicians.
On 6 September 1946 the station received a commercial licence as WBKB on VHF channel 4, becoming the first commercial station outside the Eastern Time Zone and the sixth in the United States. It aired some of the earliest CBS programmes, including the 1947 debut of Junior Jamboree, later renamed Kukla, Fran and Ollie. Channel 4 operated initially as an independent station before network affiliations settled.
Streaming Output
The service carries Chicago's reporting beyond the broadcast schedule: breaking stories from the city and the surrounding counties, weather and traffic, Cook County politics, crime and the courts, and coverage of the region's business, sport and cultural life.
