The Damascus bureau of Al Yaum TV never really sleeps. When the evening bulletin closes in the Gulf, the night shift in Syria is only getting started - and the channel has built its name on being there first, on the story, while the region sleeps.

The name says it plainly: قناة اليوم, the channel of the day. Launched on 27 October 2003, Al Yaum set out to be exactly that - a window onto what is happening today, in Syria above all. Its newsroom follows the country's politics and daily life with a focus few bigger networks can match, and its correspondents file from the places where the story actually is.

Syria First

Other Arabic channels cover the whole region; Al Yaum lives in one country. That focus shows in the detail of its coverage - the municipal decisions, the market prices, the local disputes that the pan-Arab networks skip. Between the news editions come the talk programs where Syrians argue about their own affairs, and the drama and entertainment that fill the hours in between.

The channel broadcasts free-to-air on Nilesat and streams live on its own site, reaching Syrians at home and the large diaspora that left during the war years. For them, the channel of the day is often the clearest window back home.
