TV channels Local TV
Local TV is the corner of television closest to everyday life: the stations that cover one city, one province or one community rather than a whole country. Regional newsrooms, city channels, public-access services and diaspora broadcasters all meet in this genre.
The genre has two distinct faces. One is the American block of local news stations, affiliates of the big networks. The other is the international mosaic of regional broadcasters - from OK54 in Trier and Telenord in Italy to Teleantillas Canal 2 in the Dominican Republic - together with municipal channels, public-access services and stations built for diaspora communities.
American Local News Stations
The United States contributes the biggest contingent of local news operations. WFTS and FOX 13 News - Tampa Bay cover Florida - the Bay Area and Tampa respectively - while WCNC-TV is the NBC affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina and KBJR-TV serves the Northland from Duluth. 12 News - KPNX is Phoenix's NBC affiliate and one of Arizona's leading local news operations, WIVB has been Buffalo's CBS station since 1948, WREG News Channel 3 serves Memphis and the Mid-South, and WBNG 12 News leads the news for New York's Southern Tier around Binghamton.
Municipal, Community and Diaspora Channels
A parallel American block belongs to the stations cities and communities run for themselves. Boston City TV covers the city's culture, community events and local news, Seattle Channel is the City of Seattle's municipal channel, and CapeTV 98, NNT - Newport News TV and WCTV 48 carry the public business of Cape Coral, Newport News and Chesapeake. Public access is represented by TCTV of Thurston County, Access Sacramento Channel 17 and MNN NYXT Channel of Manhattan Neighborhood Network, while Tulalip TV serves the Tulalip Tribes of Washington State and Island TV broadcasts for the Haitian diaspora of South Florida. Persian-language exile broadcasting adds Tin TV from Los Angeles and Didgah TV, and from Canada CityNews 680 brings the all-news service of Toronto with headlines, traffic and weather.
European Regional Broadcasters
Europe contributes a dense network of regional channels. Germany's non-commercial regional television appears with OK54 from Trier, KWtv for Königs-Wusterhausen and Wildau, and RTL Muenchen for Munich's regional news. Italy is one of the strongest contenders: TeleBoario Canale in Val Camonica, Telenord, TV Siena in Tuscany, VideoTeleCarnia in Carnia, the Umbrian Tef Channel, Calabria's PromovideoTV, which began broadcasting in the 1980s, and TVA Vicenza. France has Astv and Tébéo TV, the Netherlands the Limburg regional broadcaster L1 TV, ZO!34 TV as the voice of Southeast Drenthe and Omroep Ons West Brabant, and Belgium RTC Tele Liege. Hungary's city television tradition is present with Gyöngyösi TV, Bajai TV, Miskolc TV and Budapest13 - TV13, while Greece adds Nea TV of Crete and Samiaki TV of Samos. The rest of the map runs from Spain's RTVCE and Portugal's Agueda.TV through Romania's TVR Craiova, Croatia's Z1 TV, Bosnia and Herzegovina's NTV Jata and the news channel N1 Bosna i Hercegovina, to North Macedonia's MRT 2 Sat.
Russian Regional and Turkish Local Channels
Russia's regional broadcasters form a steady presence: Tyumenskoye Vremya, NTRK Ingushetiya, the Yenisei TV channel, Kaskad TV and Channel 8 - each covering its own region with news, current affairs and entertainment. Turkey contributes Kanal Z, the first local channel of Zonguldak, and Guney TV with its news and programs from Southeastern Anatolia. The surrounding region adds Ashur TV, the Assyrian satellite channel from Kurdistan, Kirkuk TV from Iraq, Israel's internet channel Shelanu Tv, Vietnam's DaNangTV 2 and India's Amrita TV and Jaya TV for Kerala and Tamil audiences.
Latin American and African Local Stations
Latin America closes the circle with its own local heroes. The Dominican Republic alone supplies Televiaducto canal 14, Visión 3000 Canal 3, Canal 10 Yuna Vision and Teleantillas Canal 2, the oldest channel of the country. Ecuador adds Multicanal Catamayo and Ecotel Tv, Bolivia Cadena A, Chile Canal 5 Puerto Montt and La Red TV, and the Southern Cone brings Argentina's Canal Doce Misiones, Uruguay's Canal Once Punta del Este and TVFlorida, Mexico's TVP Los Mochis and Brazil's TV Taroba for western Paraná together with the agricultural Rural Tv. From the wider world, Haiti's Dieu TV and Benin's Canal 3 Bénin extend the local format to the Caribbean and West Africa.
