B1 TV is a Romanian television network that began broadcasting in December 2001 as a local general-profile station in Bucharest and has operated as a news channel since 2011. It transmits twenty-four hours a day across the country and reaches ninety-two per cent of the territory through analogue and digital cable networks and satellite.

Development

In 2004 News Corporation bought 12.5 per cent of the network's shares. Six years later, SC B1 TV Channel SRL acquired the audiovisual licence for all programmes under the name B1, and the rebranding followed in March 2011, when the station moved to an infotainment format.

In May 2011 the National Audiovisual Council extended the licence to nine years. By September of that year B1 had become a news station outright, and from the autumn it adopted a news and current affairs schedule built on a large number of bulletins and debates.

Programmes

The newsroom's core output is Știrile B1, with the day's developments in politics, the economy and society. Debate and analysis are carried in Talk B1, Special B1, Politica Zilei and 360 de Grade.

Morning programming includes Bună, România!, and the schedule is filled out by News Pass, Check Media, Se întâmplă acum, Frontline and Drumurile noastre. Investigative and social strands appear in Condamnații, Fărădelege, Doctorul and Romi pentru România.

Access

B1 is carried by cable and satellite operators across Romania and streams live through its own website, where the news output and the live player are published together, with recordings also available on YouTube.
